Outsourcing Firm Employee Blamed for Coinbase Data Leak

A data breach affecting Coinbase customers originated from an employee at TaskUs, an outsourcing firm handling the exchange’s customer support.
According to a June 3 Reuters report, the India-based worker allegedly took photos of customer data and sold it to hackers—with Coinbase reportedly notified in January.
The breach, disclosed publicly by Coinbase in May, impacted nearly 70,000 users. TaskUs fired two employees over the incident, though a January mass layoff of 200 workers had already drawn scrutiny.
The case highlights risks in crypto firms’ reliance on third-party vendors, with TaskUs now facing a lawsuit in New York over its data security practices.
