UK Cracks Down: Public Sector Banned from Paying Ransomware Gangs

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The UK is taking a hardline stance against ransomware, banning all public sector organizations and critical infrastructure providers—from hospitals to local councils—from paying cybercriminals.

The new rules, announced Tuesday, expand current restrictions and introduce strict reporting mandates. Even private firms outside the ban must disclose ransom payments, while victims must file reports within 72 hours of an attack.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis vowed to “smash the cybercriminal business model,” signaling a tougher approach to ransomware threats.
