In a significant ruling, a special anti-corruption court in Ahmedabad has imposed life imprisonment on fourteen individuals convicted in a sophisticated cryptocurrency extortion case.

The convicted parties include eleven serving police officials and former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nalin Kotadiya.

The court, presided over by Special Judge B.B. Jadav, found them guilty of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping for ransom, illegal detention, assault, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The case stemmed from the 2018 abduction of Surat-based businessman Shailesh Bhatt, who was targeted for Bitcoin he had recovered from a failed investment in the BitConnect platform.
