Crypto Thefts Near Quadruple to $370 Million in January, Reports CertiK
Nearly $370.3 million worth of cryptocurrency was stolen last month through various exploits and scams. This figure, reported by security firm CertiK, is the largest monthly loss in almost a year and represents a fourfold increase compared to January 2025.
CertiK‘s data, released Saturday, details 40 distinct incidents. A single social engineering scam was responsible for the most significant damage, accounting for approximately $284 million of the total.
The primary method for these thefts was phishing, which siphoned off $311.3 million in January. This indicates that a large portion of the stolen funds came from deceptive tactics targeting individuals.
January’s losses are the most severe since February 2025, a month infamous for the $1.4 billion hack of Bybit that contributed to a $1.5 billion total. Compared to the $98 million stolen in January 2025, last month’s sum is a 277% rise. It also shows a 214% increase from the $117.8 million lost in December.
