Coinbase is under investigation by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) following a security breach that leaked internal documents and data from a select group of customer accounts.

The breach was executed by bribing overseas support agents, according to Bloomberg, with confirmation from Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal.

Grewal stated:

“We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies, and welcome law enforcement’s pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors.”

The DoJ has not yet provided any public comments. Coinbase disclosed the breach after an attempted $20 million ransom, instead offering a reward of the same amount for information identifying those involved.

The leaked data includes customer names, addresses, emails, account balances, and partial Social Security numbers, but not private keys or passwords, and Prime accounts were not impacted.
