China Cites National Security Risks in Crackdown on Crypto Biometric Data Collection

Reading Time: < 1 minute

China’s security authorities have singled out a cryptocurrency project—strongly implied to be Worldcoin—for its controversial iris-scanning model, framing it as a potential espionage tool.

The Ministry of State Security claimed in a WeChat post that a foreign entity has been amassing biometric data globally under the pretense of crypto distributions.

The ministry warned that the transfer and storage of such sensitive data could enable foreign surveillance, threatening China’s national security.

This aligns with previous regulatory actions, including Indonesia’s recent suspension of Worldcoin over similar privacy concerns.
