The US Securities and Exchange Commission is gearing up for a significant regulatory shift, with plans to introduce a dedicated classification framework for cryptocurrencies.

In a speech on Wednesday, SEC Chair Paul Atkins revealed the agency will formally consider a “token taxonomy” in the coming months.

This framework aims to anchor the distinction between securities and commodities in solid legal reasoning, finally providing the clarity the crypto market has sought.

The comprehensive plan also includes a “tailored offering regime” with specific exemptions for digital assets classified as securities, bringing SEC rules in line with pending congressional legislation.
