A $1.1 Billion Blackout: Malaysia’s Costly Battle Against Rogue Crypto Miners

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A shadow industry of illegal cryptocurrency mining has cost Malaysia‘s national power provider more than a billion dollars.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has identified nearly 14,000 properties that stole electricity to fuel mining operations over a three-year period, leading to unprecedented financial damage.

The energy ministry revealed the 4.6 billion ringgit ($1.11 billion) loss stems from miners who bypassed official meters and tapped directly into the grid.

In a coordinated fightback, TNB is now working with national police and anti-graft agencies to raid premises, confiscate Bitcoin mining rigs, and build a comprehensive database to track the individuals behind the thefts.
