The Dutch police have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of laundering funds stolen using a malicious update to the crypto wallet Electrum.

According to the official statement, the suspect laundered “tens of millions of euros” and was tracked through Bitcoin transactions.

According to law enforcement officers, he converted BTC to Monero (and vice versa) using the decentralized platform Bisq.

The police have said:

“Cryptocurrency, like regular money, is vulnerable to all kinds of crimes. In particular, the anonymous and cross-border nature of digital assets provides opportunities for attackers. They can get them, for example, through extortion, hacking or fraud.”

The man was arrested on September 6 in Utrecht.
