South Korea Fines Worldcoin
The Personal Information Protection Commission in South Korea has issued a fine of 1.1 billion Korean won ($830,000) to Worldcoin and its developer, Tools For Humanity, for alleged violations related to the collection and transfer of personal data.
The commission stated that Worldcoin did not properly inform individuals about the purpose and length of possession of their scanned iris data, and failed to provide a Korean translation of their biometric data consent form before March 22.
The Worldcoin Foundation was fined 725 million won ($545,000) for mishandling sensitive information and transferring it overseas, while TFH was fined 379 million won ($285,133) for failing in their duty to ensure appropriate data transfer.
The regulator also noted that the foundation and TFH did not comply with local laws by not informing individuals of the country and recipient of the transferred data.
