Founder of Failed TerraUSD Stablecoin to Receive Fraud Sentence
Do Kwon is scheduled to be sentenced for his role in one of cryptocurrency’s most spectacular failures. The developer of the TerraUSD and Luna tokens will learn his fate in federal court after admitting to charges stemming from their $40 billion collapse.
Kwon entered a guilty plea, confessing that he provided false assurances to investors regarding the fundamental stability of the TerraUSD algorithmic stablecoin. His fraudulent claims centered on the coin’s ability to reliably hold its peg to the US dollar.
The case against Kwon emerged from the wider unraveling of the digital asset sector in 2022. He became a central figure among several crypto magnates charged by US authorities in the aftermath of that period’s significant market distress.
The sentencing proceeding before US District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer in Manhattan will determine the consequences for Kwon’s crimes. The prosecution has framed the event as a critical moment for accountability in the often-unregulated crypto industry.
Citing the profound impact on investors and the global crypto market, US prosecutors have urged the court to imprison Kwon for a minimum of 12 years. His legal representatives advocate for a lighter sentence, proposing a five-year maximum to allow for his repatriation to South Korea for pending criminal proceedings there.
