Fake job interviews helped hackers breach Binance before $6.3 billion theft
Binance has disclosed how attackers compromised its systems before stealing approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency last Thursday.
The hackers used a fake job interview and malicious software concealed in an advertisement to gain access to the computers of two software engineers. They then used a third employee’s computer to carry out the theft.
The exchange said the operation involved several stages and began in June, with multiple security breaches leading up to the attack. The hackers continued transferring cryptocurrency for almost four hours after the first theft, despite Binance moving to restrict access and suspend withdrawals.
The FBI has attributed the attack to a North Korean hacking group, although Pyongyang has denied involvement. Binance has said it will reimburse customers for all stolen funds. The incident has renewed scrutiny of security practices at major crypto exchanges.
