CFTC opens US market to individual stock perpetual futures
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has authorised exchanges to offer perpetual futures contracts linked to individual stocks for the first time.
CFTC Chair Michael Selig approved the products on Tuesday, allowing US platforms to list contracts that have no expiry date and let traders speculate on share prices without owning the underlying securities. Selig said the move would extend access to instruments used for risk management and price discovery.
Perpetual futures have become increasingly popular in cryptocurrency markets, where platforms such as Hyperliquid offer round-the-clock trading. Their ability to operate outside traditional market hours attracted attention earlier this year when disruptions to oil supplies occurred over a weekend, while conventional futures markets were closed.
